As India prepares for the Union Budget 2026, it is essential to move beyond headline numbers and examine how government finances have actually performed in the past. Historical data provides critical insight into future fiscal constraints, revenue risks, and expenditure pressures.
This analysis uses 8 years of Government of India accounts data (FY17–FY25), sourced from the Controller General of Accounts (CGA), and evaluates performance against Budget Estimates on a month-by-month and year-wise basis, expressed as a percentage of GDP.
